Byker, Walker, Newcastle

Byker

After looking at Sirrka- Liisa Konttinen's book Byker i decided to visit Byker and see if anything had changed since her photographs in the late 60s and early 70s. It could be argued that Byker is very similar now to what it was 30 years ago.

Windows boarded up with metal.

  • rubbish dumped in gardens
  • social responsibility

Although the image above is not particularly great in terms of composition i love the woman in it. The way she is holding the flowers in front of her face, almost on purpose, is intriguing to me and injects a bit of humor into the photograph.

Walker

Situated east of Newcastle, near Byker. I decided to concentrate on derelict housing in Walker as it seemed a very prominent issue and one that was quite shocking to me.

  • poor housing
  • derelict houses
  • whole streets of houses boarded up with a couple of houses in between occupied
  • parts of streets knocked down
  • metal sheets keeping people out? - squatters?
  • remnants of how people used to live - wallpaper

Newcastle (city center)

In Newcastle city center i wanted to continue my theme of social deprivation in inner cities and see how it compared to Glasgow.
